LED Table: Lights are Right Beneath the Surface

by Eran Abramson on May 7, 2008 in DIY (Do It Yourself)Comments (1)

led_diy_table_1

A neat homemade project of an LED table.

This table was built with the lights embeded right beneath the surface, so as you run your hand across, it is still flat, smooth and beautiful. Since the lights are not installed on the table, when it is not running, they are not visible, and it looks like a regular table. As the LED is started, the table comes to life with different patterns and messages.

As seen in the video below, it seems the patterns of lights are interchangeable and customizable for preference of messages and shapes.

The images are of the actual construction of this project.

Circuit Board Propeller Clock

by Eran Abramson on May 7, 2008 in DIY (Do It Yourself)Add a Comment

This clock creation is beautiful and is made of only a circuit board, a small motor and LED’s.

On the surface it looks like a simple circuit board and nothing else, but once you spin it, the LED’s light up and the time is presented clearly.

I am not sure if it is something actually useful, but I take my hat off for the creator and its simplicity.

A Robot Giraffe Named Russel is Receiving Great Response

by Eran Abramson on May 6, 2008 in Customer ExperienceAdd a Comment

robot_giraffe_russel

I have always liked Giraffes. I am envious of the size and height, for it seems that they will always get to see things first.

Russel the robotic giraffe has been introduced at MakerFaire and is really receiving a lot of love from children and adults.

The seventeen foot robot has webcams installed as its eyes, and sensors to feel the audience’s touch. As individuals pet it, it responses by claiming it enjoys the touch, and that it sometimes tickles along with a short giggle.

Russel introduces itself by its given name and seems like a wonderful technological interaction at local fairs. I myself am hoping to run into Russel in the near future.

You can see the robot giraffe mingling with the audience in the short video below.

Build a Microsoft Surface Like Table By Yourself

by Eran Abramson on May 6, 2008 in DIY (Do It Yourself)Add a Comment

microsoft_surface_cubit_diy

Most of us have seen the intriguing Microsoft Surface commercials and their possibilities, but can we really afford one? A Do It Yourself version has been developed by Eyebeam.

For the much lower cost of $500-1000, the Cubit Project is available, allowing you to download the software and also instructions of building one all by your own.

In addition, a Cubit kit including all the hardware necessary to build the Surface like product is being talked about. This would consist of all the necessary materials, instructions, and requires you to just provide a computer to hook up the table to. Although a price has not been mentioned for the full kit, additional information is available at their site.

This DIY may not have the Microsoft brand stamped to it, but I believe that many may look at that as one of the more attractive features of the project.

If you have been interested in the Surface product, would you consider a full purchase of the original, building one all by yourself, or getting the Cubit kit?

The iPhone Helps You Water Your Plants Now

by Eran Abramson on May 6, 2008 in How to and HacksAdd a Comment

We get so wrapped up in our daily routine, work, friends, and hobbies, that many times we forget to take care of some necessary chores, such as watering our plants.

It is not that we do not realize that plants won’t simply be patient and wait until we remember them. We are sometimes just too busy to water them, aren’t home to do so, or have other tasks that are higher on our list of priorities.

Well, how convenient would it be to be able to water your plants from your office desk using your iPhone?

A guy going by the name of Peter has developed a robotic watering system that takes command from an iPhone. Based on the controls, as you turn the safari screen from vertical to horizontal, a command is sent to an actual watering can to turn so respectively. The longer you hold the iPhone turned, the longer that water is running on the plant.

Of course, if you have a forest in your home, it would not be as easy to set up individual watering cans for each plant, but the concept is still pretty cool.

Smart Technology Shoe: Verb for Shoe is Taking Orders

by Eran Abramson on May 6, 2008 in Tech Products NewsAdd a Comment

verb_technology_shoe

The “Smart Shoe” of Verb for Shoe has passed many ideas, product renders, and hype, and is now available to order.

This shoe has an internal computer inside that will automatically adjust the shoe to fit better to the individual (reminds me of Back To The Future 2). In addition, it will sync with your computer and also communicate with other like shoes.

Does this mean that you may sync different files, mp3’s, videos to your shoe and then share them with your basketball buddies while you are doing a slam dunk? I am not certain.

Anyways, it will be available later this year for the hefty price of $700. Is that too pricey? Answer the poll below.

How To Build Your Own Cellphone Calls Interceptor

by Tal Siach on May 5, 2008 in How to and HacksComments (4)

[Update: I have been informed by a number of users and friends that this video and hack is a complete hoax, but Arik was the straw that broke the camel’s back. I may be a bit gullible, but when I first saw it, I thought it was something really great to write a post about. Well, I must admit, I have been had, but it is ok at least I didn’t get RickRolled :) Thanks to everyone for letting me know]

Do you ever find yourself eavesdropping on other’s conversations? Are you interested in listening to other cellphone talks? Do you have free time for a Do It Yourself project that will easily let you intercept different cellphone conversations? Then this fun project may be for you, even though it may not be ethical or legal (at your own discretion).

The video details how you can build a cellphone interceptor very easily. The steps and directions are explained well, and the only materials needed are a Television remote control, a metal bowl or wok (the larger, the better reception), and a microphone.

Based on the commentary, this could intercept calls up to 1-2 miles away. That does sound intriguing, doesn’t it?

Although we may need to think twice before actually intercepting other’s calls, you have to admit the concept is still pretty cool.

The VHS Tape is Transformed into a USB Hub

by Eran Abramson on May 5, 2008 in DIY (Do It Yourself)Comments (1)

usb_hub_videotape

Remember the good old video tape days?

I myself had hundreds of VHS tapes laying around with different TV shows, movies, and music videos that I watched over and over. With the speedy progress of technological innovation, it seems they have become completely useless, so quick.

This great do it yourself hack has brought the video tape back to life, in a classic and practical daily use. It has transferred our long lost video item into a cool looking USB Hub.

This diy project requires one of these loved tapes, an actual USB hub, some cables, and an optional switch. You can find the directions at Instructables, along with visual imagery and how to.

For me, this project brought tears to my eyes along with nostalgic memories. How about you? Do you miss the VHS tapes?

Build a Giant Multi LCD Screen Display

by Tal Siach on May 5, 2008 in Tech Products NewsComments (1)

lcd_screen_3

Do you work with only one screen? Would you like to add another, or two, or 29 to it?

9XMedia provides different sized LCD screens (from 19 to 40 inches) which you may customize and continue to clip together. This is a pick and build creation where you select the screen of your choice, and continually clip another screen to it. Little by little, you are able to build a massive LCD screen for your computer needs, cinematic features, or perhaps just to spend a large amount of money.

Although the package pictured below may be out of my budget, I can easily see how fun it would be to surf the net, watch YouTube videos, view my favorite TV shows, or enjoy the latest movie on it?

World’s Largest LED Screen is Sun Powered

by Eran Abramson on May 4, 2008 in Industry NewsComments (4)

greenpix_led_screen_1

The largest LED screen in the world was installed in Xicui entertainment complex in Beijing, close to where the 2008 Olympics are to take place.

This display is comprised of “2,292 color (RGB) LED’s light points comparable to a 24,000 sq. ft. (2.200 m2) monitor screen for dynamic content display”.

Created by the GreenPix project, this display uses the sun’s energy only. It collects power during the day to be used during the nightly showing, which are of different artists’ performances and videos.

greenpix_led_screen_2

It is set to turn on this month, as the Olympics are getting close.

A short video demonstration may be seen below, and their site has additional images and videos.
