How fun would it be to have a drumming partner while sitting at home listening to some tunes?
Whether we are drummers or not, we all like drumming beats on a coffee table or desk. We hear a good tune and begin to beat a nearby object, mimicking the beats. Sometimes we even end up improving (hopefully) on what we hear and improvising new sounds. Wouldn’t it be cool to have an interactive drumming robot to accompany you?
A few students designed a robotic percussionist who listens to your playing and drums with you. This robot listens to the beat and then begins adding its own creation. If your beat gets a little longer, the drumming robot will actually join in with its own improv.
This great video below shows the talent of this robot in real time action. This technology is beautiful.
When I saw this, I was amazed - it looks so fun. True, it would probably be expensive, but would eventually become more affordable.
If it is done with drums, it would probably be made with additional instruments. I can picture how it will look to see improvising robot bands sitting on a street corner, playing for change.

I like this idea a lot. Price would probably be quite steep though! If it was cheap enough it would be a funny one to show to your friends!

I think the robot is annoyed that the human’s rhythm is off
I’ve seen a few projects by artists exploring interactive sound, but I think this is the most musician-like interaction I’ve seen so far.

Hi Robot Enthusiast, I believe you are right.
This interaction is pretty cool and flows nicely. The robot seems to make up beats easily and effectively. I think it is amazing.
Thank you for your visit.

I think you should put two of them together, start them off with a simple beat, and just let them go. That would be cool.

Hi Shawn, Thank you for your comment.
That is a really cool idea. They will improvise off of eachother.
