Divx Pro Free Download is Available for a Limited Time
| by Tal Siach on December 12, 2007 in Software and Add-ons |
Why not save a little money this holiday season with a free download of Divx Pro?
Convert and compress your home movies, TV shows, and films library into Divx format easily with Divx Pro. Although this software usually costs only $20, it is always nice getting something for free.
For a limited time, Divx is offering a complimentary download of their Divx Pro software, which consists of both a converter and the Codec. The converter includes an easy to use drag-and-drop feature to make your conversion time simpler. This software is definitely a useful one to have available.
It is currently not mentioned when this free download ends, so if you are interested, make it quick.
Thanks to my friend Zichi that shared this tip with all of us!

Mwahaha! I downloaded the installer but since I don’t have Windows installed on any system, I tried to install it @ Gentoo Linux (using Wine).
I can’t believe that even after being hard-coded to install things in the c:\windows\blah..blah directories, it somehow reached the end of the installation process where I was allowed to enter my email id. Now I have received the serial number, just to save it for any future uses when I might plan to re-think about Windows.
Complete crazy software installer!

Hey Tal, good looking out on this one. I made sure to d/l it and get my code before the trial is up.
Is this some sort of ploy to get more people to encode with Divx? It seems like for a while it was taking over as one of the best compression tools.

Hi Ferrari Dave, Avinash, and Jerad, Thank you for visiting.
@FerrariDave: I am glad you liked the post and thank you for the mention
@Avinash: If we could have the serial number for free and use it in the future, why not?
@Jerad: Happy you liked it.
I didn’t see the promo mentioned on their home page, so it is mostly getting noticed by posts and word of mouth. They will probably offer paid downloads, plug ins, or application in the near future that will enhance the use of Divx Pro. In addition, I think you are right: they want as many people as they can to use their format. That is why it is worth it for them.

I wish this is not the only time for free.

What will this free download opportunity mean for the users when Divx issues a new update to the Pro version? Are we locking ourselves in by downloading the free version and getting used to a software that may eventually require us to make the purchase in the end.

It may be a promotional thing, but I think of the phrase “There’s nothing more expensive than free” and wonder if there is a catch on down the line.

The email said to start converter and click on “enter serial number button”. On my mac version, there is no button for entering a serial number.
I can see no way to enter a SN.
What am I missing.

Hi everyone, thank you so much for your comments. Happy Holidays!
@Dragoljub: True, they may introduce new adons that will be needed to optimize the software. Of course, these ad ons will probably have a price tag attached. Still, this downloaded version may be sufficient for some as is, which makes it worthwhile for these individuals.
@joelily: Unfortunately I am not aware of the solution, but if I find it, I will add it as a comment. If you do find the remedy prior, please share it with us here.

Help > Search for updates.
“Oh, were sorry, but you have to buy a copy of Divx Pro to be able to received an update”
Most people’s answer:
“Oh ok, here’s my CC, it’s just 20$”
Marketing at it’s best.

To back up an earlier comment - whenever I try to view a video I uploaded - Firefox crashes, I tried with IE with the same result - what is the point in having this if that happens?
