Potassium Chlorate + Gummy Bear = An Awesome Explosion

When I was a kid, I absolutely loved the show Gummi Bears. I’m not sure who came up with the idea to make a TV show out of a popular candy product, but damn it if I didn’t enjoy the content. I guess some clever Science person did not like the show as much as I did however. This video shows us what happens to Gummi Bears who don’t hand over the magic formula: They get doused in potassium chlorate and subsequently explode.

The video is mercifully short, only about a minute long, so if you’re short on time you should still be able to squeeze in a good viewing. I have no idea what potassium chlorate is (so I was never much of a chemist, sue me. No wait, don’t do that), but apparently it is not a fan of Gummi Bears. I mean, just look at how quickly the poor guy gets incinerated. The reaction isn’t over quickly either, as it goes on for a good 45 seconds or so. The Gummi Bear never had a chance, I’m reporting this to the Gummi Bear humane society.

Here at Walyou, we’re not about tormenting and splicing Gummi Bears in various ways either. Whether they go under the knife and end up with multiple Gummi Bear heads, or we turn them into Gummi Bear night lights, the path of the Gummi Bear is never easy. I think I have to go pop in a couple of episodes of the old show now to make myself feel better. No one ever douses the bears in Gummi Bears in potassium chlorate there…although that would make for an awesome episode.  I guess I’ll have to wait till they remake the show, which should happen sometime between now and the end of time.
