For all the electronic gadget lovers, this retro and a practical design is just perfect for you to try and makes for a great Interactive visual presentation. This designed pole interactive installation has visuals that allow different users to play with wood pieces in a table, controlling elements projected on the floor in an appealing way.

The project by Ishac Bertran, who also brought the Linyl Light Records, was exhibited at the Final Exhibition of the Computational Design course and gives you an amazing platform for exploration. What’s interesting is that ±pole allows multiple users at a time to play with groups of particles and polarized elements by placing wood blocks on the table to control the digital elements all by themselves.

These colored visuals are developed with processing that consists of a system of particles that is affected by three types of elements controlled by wooden blocks of 3 different types: a generator that shoots the particles at a certain frequency, while attractors and deflectors create the force fields that affect the trajectories of the particles.

This cool gadget creates a complex system in real-time for experimentation while creating appealing visuals according to your own movements, just making it all the more fun. The table has a glass surface which is sandblasted to disperse the light. The visuals are captured by a camera using ReacTIVision.

You can use this gadget as a platform for your children to explore the world of science.

Comet Phone Booth: an Innovative and Portable Telephone Booth

There are many projects going on in this world and some of them are very intriguing, and one of such projects is Comet Phone Booth, worked out at the Interaction Design Programme, which is movable and not static like the traditional telephone booths found all over the world.

The booth actually uses a hair dryer helmet to do the function. Quite an innovation that left me speechless! How could one use a hair dryer to make a phone call? Here is the explanation from DKDS.

The guys hacked the Arduino circuits on to an old hair dryer and applied their scientific knowledge to integrate it with a chair to produce what we know as “Comet Phone Booth”. Something called magic booth for simple minds!

Let’s discuss the process. By default, the device remains in standby mode but once the user sits on the chair and puts on the helmet, a red light glows up signaling that ‘it is in use’ and guides the user to make a phone call. The user keys in the number using a hefty keypad (shown below) that comes along with it. Rest of the process is invisible but the outcome is not. The desired call gets placed for conversation to follow.

The helmet serves to you the incoming voice of the person you are talking to and the microphone placed inside captures your voice to be sent over. Once the conversation is over, users leaves the chair and the booth goes back to stand-by mode.

The big thing is that the booth is movable meaning we may soon see a telephone booth in its portable version. It would be great to see the booths being moved to the location where the potential users are, like to a sports stadium when the public is going on or coming out of. Same applies to the cinema halls. Personal computers have many utilities, be it business or personal, but for geeks like me, apart from personal use (including blogging) it also serves as a fashion statement. That is also what compels me to upgrade my PC from time to time and bring in new accessories like graphic card, foldable computer keyboard or gaming mouse to the extent my budget allows (the only limit).

One convenient way to make PC eye catching is to upgrade the mouse. Generally, upgrades are meant and confined only towards gaming mouse, but we take a bow towards change and bring a masterpiece for music lovers. Although there are masterpieces in the gaming category, but the army of such mice, sometimes results in boredom. That is exactly a driving factor for the change. Lets confine ourselves to the mouse of the…. say, month, the ceramic passion by Onur Karaalioglu(pictured). Right now, it is only a concept mouse until somebody decides to take the beauty to the market, if commercial sense is perceived. A moment of rejoice to music lovers and sorry gamers, this time. But ‘Gamers Don’t Cry’, right. Myself being a very very hardcore gamer, I know the ideology!

Supposing you are a music freak and hate to ‘locate and hit the specific keys on the music player’ and just wished that something directly should control the player with instant connectivity, then this one is for YOU. A must have for members of music bands for they know how much time they spend on their PC table working around music apps to take the precision to highest level.

Rock-It Vibrating Speaker and Origami Speakers from OrigAudio are on My List of Fun Gadgets

Orig Audio creates some Fun Gadgets that should not be overlooked, for their usability and practicality gets bonus points in my book, and along with the cool looks…they definitely make my list of cool gadgets for fun times.

After running into them at CES 2010 earlier this year, we were happy to personally try two of their main products that are both affordable for portable music lovers and also grant an enhanced (if not plain fun) mobile listening experience. We ended up testing out the OrigAudio Origami Speakers and also the Rock-It Portable Vibration Speaker.

OrigAudio Origami Speakers are cool portable speakers which are extremely affordable at only $16 a pair and grant another version of keeping green along with added mobility by size and package. What does this mean? Well, in short, these speakers arrive in two cardboard squares which with very little crafting effort are folded and put together to resemble two perfectly square speakers. Both are connected with one single wire and by just plugging into your iPhone, MP3 Player, PMP or other audio or video device, provide a great audio experience. Ok, so they are not your home Bose system, but then again, they are convenient, fun, easy to carry and truly sound great for their size. Moreover, the portable speakers are very simple to fold together and give you mobile sound that does not break your bank whatsoever. Even better, they come in a variety of artwork printed on the speaker boxes and OrigAudio also gives you an easy way to customize their look (price varies) with logos, images, brands and even choice of a triangle speaker if you don’t want to feel too square.

Rock-It portable Vibration Speaker is another neat audio device from OrigAudio but this one is a little more involved and with it…also easier to carry along when traveling, going to a friend’s house and putting to every day use. Simply put, it is a portable vibration device that after being plugged into your iPhone or other music player, releases the music with the collaboration of external products and practically turns anything into a speaker. Besides the Rock-It example video below, it is simply providing external vibrations (and sounds) that can then be placed on an empty box, flat surface or almost any other solid item and uses the specific item to play the music for all to hear. Sounds weird? It is, but we are happy to say that it provides a fun and great music experience, with many possibilities as to what can be used to output the music through. We have tried boxes, desktop tables, actual speaker boxes, old school TV’s and anything else we could place the Rock-It on. The bottom line…true portable music no matter where you are at; you can use almost anything you could put your mind to, and if you are traveling, camping, or spending the night somewhere and don’t want to carry any portable speakers…then this mobile solution really answers your need. Moreover, it is only $49.99.

From the two OrigAudio gadgets above, the portable speakers do not need any batteries, for they are utilizing the portable audio/video device’s power. On the other hand, the Vibration speaker requires two AAA batteries (or USB or DC Power), but besides that, it is even more portable than the foldable speakers, for it comes in a neat hard case that latches closed with the wire wrapping neatly around it.

I gotta hand it to OrigAudio, as in practical gadgets that are really fun to use, they have really brought forth cool ideas and implemented them rather well. We hope to see some more cool gadgets from them in the near future.

Catch the i-Tab: the Coolest Gadget for Guitarists

While it is debatable and only hard core guitar players will be in a decent position to pick up one, one cannot rule out that the coolest gadget (if not the best one) for guitarists belongs to the i-Tab. Although is has an i as prefix, it does not belong to Apple.

The iTab is basically a gadget meant solely for music lovers who only can make the most of its functions tied along with its mobility. For one, the device can be attached to guitar and will display (with automatic scroll through) the chords of the tones being played on the guitar. Quite impressive, since one’s hands are not free while playing a guitar, the automatic scroll down feature which recognizes the chords being played, comes very handy. And you don’t need a third hand to hold the i-Tab with you since it fixes itself quite comfortably on the guitar itself.

Speaking of specs, it features a nice 5 inch touch screen with 4GB of storage space. The memory card space is large enough to store thousands of tabs downloaded on to it. Around 5000 tabs are available for download on the i-Tab Online Tab store and approx 500 tabs are being added week by week basis. So plenty of stuff up for grab with more coming heavily.

Plus, it comes packed with built-in speaker, headphone port, USB connectivity, a stylus and video out. Expect the device to get launched by April. Regarding price, it will make your wallet lighter by $199. Worthy enough given the functions and features. An awesome product for guitar fans by any means!

One can argue that tabs can be downloaded on PC from Internet and played thereby, but it is not that easy as it looks and i-tab clearly has an upper hand. We shall see. First of all, attach the device on the guitar and you are on the Go. Download you fav tabs and hit the button to play. While staying with the guitar, you can play music while auto scroll will adjust itself to the chords being played. So it was made that easy which clearly is not a case with Laptop/PC/Smart phones.

Again, the interface of the website resembles to that of Apple’s but no official connection. Might be the i-Tab team is Apple freak which explains thinking behind the name of the device as also the layout of the website. Oh! also innovation is equally admirable like that of Apple. I have not been a fan of eReaders until recently when I tried out the Pocketbook 360 and was intrigued by the simplicity of the eReaders, their amazing practicality and wonderful mobility. This time around, we were happy to try out the Libre eBook Reader Pro from Aluratek which provides an inexpensive eReader alternative that grants the basics needed in a compact and cool gadget. It is not on the high end scale of eBooks, yet it gives a simple to use eReader for those interested in some fun and portability in an affordable package.

Unlike many expensive and “trendy” eReaders, the Libre eBook Reader begins with providing cool start up accessories within its box that is sure to excite new arrivals into this new technolcogy field. The Libre box includes the Libre, a custom fit pouch, hand strap, 2GB SD Card, earphones, USB cable, charger, instructions and warranty.

After a preliminary charge (as requested) we were ready to try the compact Libre Ereader out and were happy with first response. The Libre overall is really simple to use and seems like something that my Dad would be happy with, for it is simple enough for him to read with. Even better, it sports a 5″ screen, so it is really portable, making it easy to carry along with you for quick readings.

The Libre eBook Reader Pro reads many different formats*, so you are not locked into DRM only documents in order to read your favorite and desired titles. Moreover, it grants the ability of image view and MP3 playing (what the earphones were provided for). These are cool extras that many could appreciate when taking the eReader on the go, for as many would agree, you do not ALWAYS want to read a book when traveling, and now you have also music and audiobook possibility in the same dvice. Granted, it doesn’t have the amazing sound for those looking for the next hi end MP3 player, but for Audiobooks or a simple alternative to reading…it came in handy.

As in the interface and use of the Libre, it is rather simple and not so innovative, but that is also a plus. What I mean is, for those that are interested in picking up an eReader and not having to spend too much time just trying to figure it out, the Libre is ready to use for any newcomer. Moreover, they preload 100 Book classic on the SD Card**, so you could have something to read that fits your desire right off the bat. Of course, you do not have to worry at all about the storage, for these 100 books take up less than 90MB, and besides the SD card provided, you can use a card up to 32GB on it. This of course means you can have plenty of reading material on the go…including music, audiobooks and images to have around with you.

The Libre controls provide different ways to turn the pages, with the left hand bar for forwards/backwards, the page flip button on bottom left to do the same, and one can even use the arrow keys in the directional pad. Moreover, the actual menu controls are self explanatory, so you can rotate the screen to landscape mode, go back to select a different book and even change the font size without being any expert. This eBook Reader Pro also grants one button selection with the right hand #s (1 thru that allow to select anything from the menu based using one # only, instead of the arrow keys…simple navigation.

Lastly, the Libre is not made with an E-Ink screen but an actual monochrome LCD screen, thus reducing costs and increasing page refreshing rates. Which brings up the final price of under $180, making it one of the most inexpensive eReaders out there and an alternative for those not looking to dig deep in their pocket for a simple and practical eReader.
