The iPhone Helps You Water Your Plants Now

by Eran Abramson on May 6, 2008 in How to and HacksAdd a Comment

We get so wrapped up in our daily routine, work, friends, and hobbies, that many times we forget to take care of some necessary chores, such as watering our plants.

It is not that we do not realize that plants won’t simply be patient and wait until we remember them. We are sometimes just too busy to water them, aren’t home to do so, or have other tasks that are higher on our list of priorities.

Well, how convenient would it be to be able to water your plants from your office desk using your iPhone?

A guy going by the name of Peter has developed a robotic watering system that takes command from an iPhone. Based on the controls, as you turn the safari screen from vertical to horizontal, a command is sent to an actual watering can to turn so respectively. The longer you hold the iPhone turned, the longer that water is running on the plant.

Of course, if you have a forest in your home, it would not be as easy to set up individual watering cans for each plant, but the concept is still pretty cool.

How To Build Your Own Cellphone Calls Interceptor

by Tal Siach on May 5, 2008 in How to and HacksComments (4)

[Update: I have been informed by a number of users and friends that this video and hack is a complete hoax, but Arik was the straw that broke the camel’s back. I may be a bit gullible, but when I first saw it, I thought it was something really great to write a post about. Well, I must admit, I have been had, but it is ok at least I didn’t get RickRolled :) Thanks to everyone for letting me know]

Do you ever find yourself eavesdropping on other’s conversations? Are you interested in listening to other cellphone talks? Do you have free time for a Do It Yourself project that will easily let you intercept different cellphone conversations? Then this fun project may be for you, even though it may not be ethical or legal (at your own discretion).

The video details how you can build a cellphone interceptor very easily. The steps and directions are explained well, and the only materials needed are a Television remote control, a metal bowl or wok (the larger, the better reception), and a microphone.

Based on the commentary, this could intercept calls up to 1-2 miles away. That does sound intriguing, doesn’t it?

Although we may need to think twice before actually intercepting other’s calls, you have to admit the concept is still pretty cool.

Print with Invisible Ink to keep Precious Documents Classified

by Eran Abramson on April 27, 2008 in How to and HacksAdd a Comment

Have you ever wanted to write a letter to someone but wanted to make sure no one else reads it? Would you like to make any letter or picture only visible by black light? The tutorial below presents a way to print with “invisible” ink, so you could create some spy-like documents.

By using an old printer cartridge and replacing the yellow ink, you would be able to print letters that would appear blank. As seen in the video, the document that was previously visible turned completely invisible when using this method.

The accomplice to the “crime” would be able to decipher and actually see the words, diagrams, or special codes only by the use of a black light.

If you try this out, let us know how it worked, and what kind of documents did you decide to make secret.

How to Play the Piano Using Your Computer Keyboard

by Tal Siach on April 21, 2008 in How to and HacksComments (1)

Every once in a while we run across a cool integration of music and technology.

There is a cool robot playing the saxophone or another improvising drum beats real time. Moreover, Guitar Hero has combined true art with Peavey, the iBand was made for the iPhone to create actual music, a virtual drumset to be used with your iPod is available, and many more.

The MidiPiano Plugin may not be new but is still really cool. Using your regular computer keyboard, you can play every note or key of the piano.

Of course, it would take some time to get used to the placement of the keys, let alone get good at it. Still, it is pretty great for the musician who would either like a break from the real physical piano or perhaps cannot afford one. Furthermore, it would also help any train their ears and abilities…the rest is up to practice.

How To Speed Up the Green Light When Waiting with Your Motorcycle at a Stoplight

by Eran Abramson on March 9, 2008 in How to and HacksComments (7)

Manipulate the stoplight while on your motorcycle and receive the Green Light just like regular automobiles do.

Have you ever noticed that when on your motorcycle at a stop light, it takes forever for the light to change to green? Is it just me that prays for a car to arrive, so the light will sense a vehicle and will finally change? Sometimes I even try to move my bike back and forth a few feet, hoping the light will sense I am actually there, and give me the green to go.

There is a way to have your motorcycle, scooter or bike detected quickly, so you can receive the same stop light service as four-wheeled vehicles do.

The Kipkay video below explains an easy way to use simple magnets on your motorcycle, so you will save time, gas, and reduce the frustration.

Since I ride a motorcycle myself, I am going to try it immediately and hope it will give me the courtesy I deserve as a driver.

If you are also going to try it out, let us know how it went and whether it made a real difference.

Hard Drive Recovery Help is Close By

by Eran Abramson on March 8, 2008 in How to and HacksComments (2)

DTI Have you backed up all your important Hard Drive Data? If your hard drive crashes today, will that cause more than just a short delay or a small problem? Would you like to have a solution close by, in case your computer crashes and all your documents, files, and information are not easily accessible?

All day long, I run different applications and continue on important documents. Sometimes, we get too busy to remember to back up all our work and files, let alone have the time to do so. If our hard drive crashes and we cannot access all our work…some of us are in a world of pain: some of the work has short due dates and other is continuous work that others are dependent on.

I ran across a great company that provides an efficient solution for Hard Drive Recovery. After checking their site over, I have noticed they have some notable clients and great feedback. In addition, since many recovery centers are not always consistent with a clean center, DTI Data has a 100% clean room as a work place and headquarters.

In case you are in peril, and all your data is locked within a crashed hard drive and cannot be accessible, they are a viable solution. They provide an up front flat rate quote to retrieve the internal information, and unless you have tried to open it by yourself or at another center…they would also guarantee their work. In other words, if they cannot assist you in getting all your pertinent files, mp3s, videos, documents, presentations, applications and more out of your hard drive for you…you do not pay.

DTI Data also provides Hard Drive Repair to be used for laptops, desktops, exchange servers and more.

Some of us actually have the ability to do such work by ourselves and would rather just get the right directions from a proven source. For those, you can check out all their Data Recovery Resources. Furthermore, all their provided software is developed in house and has been productive with previous clients, customers, and organizations.

So in case your hard drive recently crashed and you have no one to turn to, it has happened before and caused so much stress, time is extremely valuable and you are seeking a responsible and able solution, DTI Data can be your source to recover the data and with that provide some serenity (or at least reduce the stress).

How to Make an Invisible Folder on Your Desktop or Laptop

by Tal Siach on February 25, 2008 in How to and HacksComments (9)

Do any of you have certain “secretive” files that you would like kept personal but within reach? Would you enjoy playing a quick magic trick on your folks by dropping documents into an invisible folder? The how to video below quickly demonstrates an easy way to create an invisible folder on your desktop.

By having an invisible folder, you are able to have confidential files, documents, folders, movies, mp3, and more visually erased from viewers eyes. The folder is concrete and functional, but it is simply transparent.

If you are not interested watching the video, the directions are simple:

  1. Create a folder on your desktop
  2. Select to rename it, delete the default “new folder” title [do not hit “enter”]
  3. Press and hold “alt” then “0160″, release the alt key and then press “enter”. This names the folder as a “space”. [Note: Desktops must use the number keys on the right of the keyboard and not above the letters. Laptops cannot use the regular number keys, they must use the ‘function’ numbers within the keyboard (the corresponding letters are: “m-j-o-m”= “0-1-6-0. With laptops, “numlock” must be selected. Also, you must use the “Fn” key when selecting the numbers and may also need so to turn the numlock on.]
  4. Select and right click the folder. Scroll down to select “properties”, then “customize”, and then “change icon”.
  5. If you scroll through the provided icons, you will see a certain area that seems a few icons are simply missing. Select one of those empty spaces, or in other words, invisible folders.
  6. Hit “OK”, then “Apply”, then “OK”.

You now have an invisible folder on your desktop to place any files you want to make transparent. Please remember that this is not a secured file, just invisible to the eyes.

Podmailing 1Have you ever tried to send large pictures to a family member only to realize you have stalled your computer? Did you ever attempt to send home videos to friends and canceled before it was sent due to the enormous waiting time? There is a better solution for such file sharing.

With Podmailing, you are able to send large files by the use of Bittorrent. This in fact allows you to send huge videos, music, and pictures without clogging your email and killing your processing power.

Podmailing 2

At the same time, the recipients will not have their email crash either. They would receive a link to where the file is stored, for easy access and download. Once you send the file, your friends will be notified, and it will be available for them for approximately 4-7 days.

5 Fun and Easy to Use Face Generators

by Eran Abramson on February 12, 2008 in How to and HacksComments (4)

We share many photos with our friends and family. Sometimes we use a funny picture as a profile or buddy icon on our favorite social network. Either way, it is really fun to distort those photographs and create a different look or style.

I have ran across a number of different Face Generators that are extremely quick and easy to use. All you need is to upload an image of your choice and follow the simple instructions. Most of the times, one click will get the job done. Of course, since the only thing required is a picture, it doesn’t have to be a face portrait, but it is always fun to see those done.

  • Sketch Generator - Instead of paying a lot of money at a photo booth at your local mall, use a photo of your choice and give it the artist’s sketch look.
  • 3D Face Generator - While this doesn’t require an image, it develops a 3 dimensional shape of your face based on details you input.
  • Face Transformer Generator (pictured at top) - Just like it sounds, you transform a picture by changing age, race, and even gender.
  • Warhol Generator - The famous Andy Warhol style done to a picture of your choice. Watch your face displayed in different variety of colors and contrasts.

These different Generators were found on the wonderful Generator Blog. It is an entire blog that provides many different kinds of Generators for face distortion, slides creation, posters, and more. It is really fun to try the different choices provided because they are mostly so easy to use and are just a click away. Some additional examples are different band name generators, a funny Dr. Phil quote generator, Font Image Generator, and many more.

Whether you try the face generators or any of the other choices provided here or at the Generator blog, come back and tell us which are your favorites.

Have fun!
