If one were to ponder upon the achievements of mankind in the latter part of 20th century, it definitely has to be the computer which takes the icing on the cake. Even the computer received the much needed boost when the mouse came into existence and made use of spatial abilities for navigation.

Clayton Miller is all about discussing where this would lead to in the near future.

The 10/GUI video below suggests that though computers are going to remain the mainstay of modern human culture, we would need to change the way we use it. The touchscreen enabled computes of today put pressure on the forearms and even if the monitor is placed horizontally on the table, it would put pressure on the neck leading to deformities and repetitive stress injuries.

Using a mouse is always healthy and comfortable and thus bringing the touchscreen technology to the mouse instead of the monitor seems to be the principle of 10/GUI. Even the keyboard could be touchscreen enabled and have similar functions as the mouse, and thus help the user maintain a correct posture and help the user to navigate easily.

Dubbed the continuum desktop, it solves many issues faced while using multiple windows. You could adjust various windows and view them as thumbnails all at once, or use them simultaneously using all your fingers, in continuum.

10/GUI concept video below questions our beliefs about existing interaction bandwidth, interfaces that we assume are irreplaceable, and new ideas that may seem unconventional. It shows how fingers and hands can be used to navigate through the Internet, and also to perform functions which was earlier assumed not possible.

If the 10/GUI concept becomes a reality, all we may need is a touchpad and a multi touch enabled mouse to perform actions that are complicated, and also reduce stress on our muscles. Thus, the 10/GUI concept solves the common software and hardware problems faced and puts the new touchscreen concepts into practice as with the Rolltop Laptop Concept or the newly released Apple Magic Mouse.

10/GUI Concept Video Reveals the Future of Computing

Imagine if you could roll up your laptop like a newspaper and open it when required, and what if you could turn your laptop into a primary monitor if you wanted to play some awesome video games?

Well all these are possible with the cool new conceptual ROLL TOP Laptop concept, which is being touted as a Future Designer Laptop. Orkin Design has unveiled this cool new concept with the support of Schlagheck-Design and the device comes with a flexible display which can be rolled and carried wherever you want. This goes beyond the traditional book like laptops which are cumbersome to say the least.

Thanks to its OLED-Display technology and a multi touch screen, it can be used a laptop while it weighs as much as mini notebook. It comes with a 13 inch screen while being used a laptop and when being used as a monitor, you could get a cool 17 inches screen. Power supply, multi media integrated pen and even a holding belt are integrated in the ROLL TOP and it certainly is an all-in-one gadget.

If this product is ever manufactured, you could carry your laptop like a newspaper by rolling it up, and making sure that you are not burdened by heavy laptop bags. Rolltop: A Laptop Concept that Can be Rolled and Carried

Microsoft has unveiled some images and short video (see below) about the upcoming Microsoft Courier Tablet PC, which looks great at first sight, but with no actual specs…don’t fall in love just yet.

So many have been waiting, hoping and wishing that Apple will show and bring out some form of an Apple Tablet, but I guess Microsoft has beat them to the punch with the new and good looking Microsoft Courier Tablet, which immediately takes our breathe away with dual 7″ screens.

Having dual screens actually changes this Microsoft Tablet into a Booklet, even more fun for the masses. Based on its looks and videos, it is multi-touch and is supposed to be used with a stylus for writing and drawing. Right in the middle hinge is a “Home” Button, and on the side rims there is a display of Battery Life and Wireless singals.

An amazing addition that gives a little extra fun is the camera on the back cover, creating a practical tablet that gives a little more.

It has been rumored that it is in final actual design stages and getting really close to “late prototype”. Sounds exciting!

Microsoft Courier Tablet PC has Dual Screens

This image from SmallThingsIced, shows the laptop cake with a USB mouse and an iPod, which is connected for recharging, and maybe, some song transfers. But guess what? Even the accessories i.e. the mouse and the iPod have been iced, thus, giving the whole thing an all together authentic feel to it, what say? The whole laptop, including the docking wires, is edible except for one thing; the screen of the notebook is made up of cardboard.

For those of you who are quite choosy about the flavor of the masterpiece, this metallic silver cake is chocolate cake with chocolate butter cream layer at the base. And to prove the dedication of the baker of this cake, she put each key of the keyboard separately so that the finishing would be more realistic. All in all, I admire the patience and the devotion put forth by the baker of this cake and I may advice her to start a bakery (if she hasn’t already) and make a good living using her gift.

Snow White Vinyl Decals For Your Laptop

Just when we thought things couldn’t get more competitive in the arena of laptops and netbooks, Nokia has announced its snazzy netbook called the Booklet 3G. Nokia seems to be diversifying into a hitherto much tried market of netbooks, in order to become a complete mobile solutions company.

The netbook itself looks pretty awesome, and many analysts feel it resembles the MacBook Air, instead of a regular netbook. The Booklet 3G is expected to run on Intel’s Atom processor though the speed of which is not known yet. Nokia would also use Microsoft’s Windows OS though it is not clear yet if they would be using a stripped down or a full version.

The coolest feature however has to be the claimed 12 hour battery life which would give Nokia an edge over other popular netbooks in the market. It would have a screen of 10 inches and would weigh just 1.25 kilograms making it extremely portable, and convenient to use. Nokia would be competing with pioneers of netbook Asus, and also Dell and HP who have their own versions of netbooks. Asus had announced their EEE PC 900 recently, which seems to be doing pretty well. Rumours also predict that it would use the Windows 7 instead of the Vista which has become quite unpopular.

Surprisingly, the Nokia Booklet 3G comes with many astonishing features such as a built-in GPS, wireless 3G data connection, 2 cm thickness, HDMI port for High Definition content, Ovi Suite for syncing between phone, netbook and The Cloud, access to Nokia Music Store, 802.11n Wi-Fi, and many other features which are not revealed yet. The amazingly thin and portable Booklet 3G comes in blue, silver and black.

The Booklet 3G is feature rich, snazzy, chic, portable and comes from the house of Nokia, and thus things can’t really go wrong here. Many analysts however fear Nokia is venturing into a saturated market and that too with razor sharp competition which could hurt their already bleeding profits. Nevertheless, Nokia seems to see this as an opportunity to diversify its market and take on Apple and other companies which have products for both cell phone and netbook users.
