Luke, Use the Force…for Evil

by Eran Abramson on January 29, 2008 in Software and Add-onsComments (5)

Would you like to be Darth Vader’s apprentice? Am I the only one who thinks that the Dark Side just looks a lot cooler? Star Wars is releasing a new game in the Summer of 2008 that will grant you the power of the force, to be used in the amazing ways we have seen in the movies.

This upcoming release contains so much more than just awesome graphics. The development team has actually combined three new technologies in order to enhance the freedom and possibilities of the Sith apprentice: Havoc, Euphoria, and DMM (Digital Molecular Matter).

Havoc is a simulating physics platform engine, which allows several different objects to be moved on the screen simultaneously. The amazing video shows a number of different objects are flying, exploding, and reacting in each single scene.

Euphoria lets objects react independently when an action is forced upon them. For example, if a storm trooper is being blown away by the force, it may grab at a nearby object or individual. It grants artificial intelligence to the other characters and subjects in the game as well. As it is mentioned in the developer’s explanations, this provides that no two reactions in the game are ever the same.

DMM (Digital Molecular Matter) makes objects react as they would in real life, as if everything actually has its specific weight and mass. It is clearly shown how glass actually shatters, and other items presented are disintegrated and blown. DMM brings a life like quality to all the items within the game.

The making of video below is extremely fascinating. It includes interviews with the developers and writers behind this outstanding looking video game. Furthermore, you can clearly realize the inspiration of the films brought to the player’s hands with unbelievable gameplay.

Star Wars: the Force Unleashed, will be available for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 and lets you use the force…for evil.

Control All Your Instant Messenger Services in One Account

by Tal Siach on December 27, 2007 in Software and Add-onsComments (11)

Pidgin

How many different Instant Messaging accounts do you have? Would it be a little bit more convenient to control most of them in one account? With Pidgin it can easily be done and for free!

I use so many different Instant Messenger software. I have gathered a lot of friends that use the different available messengers, so I ended up becoming a member of MSN Live, AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) , Google’s Gtalk, Skype, and also Yahoo Messenger.

IM has had a big effect on my life since it’s an important tool for me to stay in touch with family members, friends, fellow bloggers and other acquaintances from around the world. This has become a necessity and therefor I have become dependent on it. This also means that at any given moment, I have a lot of IM windows opened. I keep moving from one IM window to another throughout the day, and that never seemed very convenient. Moreover, running each messenger software takes its toll on my CPU memory and slows my Internet connection all the time.

A friend of mine from NY, Jordan, has recently introduced me to this great software called Pidgin. The concept immediately enlightened me. Pidgin is a free instant messaging program for Windows, Linux, BSD, and other Unixes which grants you the ability to combine many of your messenger applications in one place.

ScreenShotImagine having your messenger accounts in one window, so all your friends are in one place to look at and talk to. Now you can, since Pidgin works with a wide range of IM accounts, such as: AIM, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, Gtalk, ICQ, IRC, MSN, MySpaceIM and a lot more!

Instead of having a number of windows in your taskbar, you have one window that allows you to speak on the different programs. This means that while you chat with one friend on Gtalk, you can talk to your coworker on MSN Live, and other people with the different programs you have an account with. The Pidgin software also logs you in to the different accounts simultaneously, so one login does the trick.

As soon as I started using Pidgin, I have noticed that my productivity went up: my computer is not as bogged down, the Internet runs faster, and I can talk to all my friends and contacts in one place. I must admit that this is one program that truly helps me on a daily basis. It makes my messenger use a whole lot better.

5 Great Firefox Add-ons

by Eran Abramson on December 17, 2007 in Software and Add-onsComments (3)

FirefoxI fell in love with Firefox approximately one year ago, during my final year in College. In this last year, I studied about the Internet, Entrepreneurship and Marketing, and was introduced to Firefox not as a browser, but as a library of productive add-ons. I am aware that not all add-ons are efficient, but many of the ones I found have been time savers and simply heaven sent.

There are five Add-ons that I found are either fun, productive, or both.

  • The download Statusbar show you the status of things being downloaded from the net in a small area right above the taskbar.
  • I always loved the mouse gestures app that allows you to perform different browsing tasks by different movements and click combinations of the mouse. For example, a simple right click and upward movement will open up a new tab in your browser.
  • Extension Room is a way for you to keep your bookmarks updated and synchronized if you use more than one computer.
  • For music lovers there is FoxyTunes, which grants you the ability to play your music (of different media players) within your browser.
  • Lastly, but surly very important is Greasemonkey. This application keeps releasing new updates that let you customize and add different features to things such as your Gmail and more.

If you are already using these or are seeking more choices, there is a great list of 50 Firefox Add-ons by Techdo.

There are so many Firefox add-ons developed out there, many keeping in mind simplicity and artifice. Are there any amazing ones that this list leaves out, and you would highly recommend? Let us know which are your favorites in the comments.

Recover Your Lost or Stolen Gadgets with iHound Software

by Eran Abramson on November 28, 2007 in Software and Add-onsComments (4)

Have you ever lost an iPod, cellphone or other electronic devices? Has your MP3 player or PDA ever been stolen? Why not recover and find your missing USB products?

I know many people that have lost their music players. These are compact and are easily misplaced. In addition, there are some instances when a product such as this gets stolen from us (see stolen iPod Touch commercial parody). As soon as we realize that our item is gone, we get a certain panic. Many different thoughts run through our head: ‘where did it go?’, ‘it cost so much money’, ‘mom is going to kill me’, etc. iHound Software offers a new and easy way to keep track of your electronic USB connected devices.

With iHound you can find out when your misplaced or stolen electronics are plugged into a different computer. No need for GPS, expensive tracking services or “Missing” Ads. This is a simple service with 3 easy steps:

  1. Register up to 3 devices for free. (As this service progresses, a fee will be determined for additional products).
  2. Set up the software for each product you wish it used for.
  3. Download and install the iHound Software on each of the requested devices.

If your device is taken and plugged into a computer other than your own, iHound notifies you by email of the location of your product.

You can browse a list of compatible USB products here.

Just like Lojack easily recovers your vehicle if stolen, with iHound, it is easy for all of us to find our missing product.

A New Contra Game is Visiting Your Cell Phone

by Eran Abramson on November 22, 2007 in Software and Add-onsAdd a Comment

Contra 4 Lock & LoadI used to play the original Konami video game Contra on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) so much as a kid. Do any of you remember the code: “Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A [for 2 players an additional B, A and then Select] Start”?

This game was so much fun and took up so much of my childhood. Even after it was beaten (over and over), I would end up playing it again. I used to set myself records to break such as time to beat the game, finish without losing a single life, and more. In addition, this game provided such a great interaction with an additional player. I mean, what could be better then to save the world from an alien invasion with your friend and a bunch of awesome weapons? Nothing!

Konami Mobile has recently released Contra 4 Lock & Load, which is priced at $5.99. A new game to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the original.

Sim City Societies is Greener and Launching Next Week

by Eran Abramson on November 8, 2007 in Software and Add-onsAdd a Comment

The classic and loved game Sim City has new and exciting core values: productivity, prosperity, creativity, spirituality, authority, and knowledge.

As a child, I played this game many times, in order to aspire and build a better working city - A place of a temporary Utopia. As much as I played, I realized that it is just a game; it cannot be a Utopia, but just a rough draft.

The new Sim City Societies of Electronic Arts (EA) grants the freedom to build a better tomorrow. A player has all the tools in order to create a Capitalist city, or even a Hippy world. Based on the values you place first when building the city, you can see how it works by the energy of its society. Are your citizens happy and productive? The game allows you to experience a city’s evolution, with different changes. The game maker understood that there are different reactions to separate climatic changes such as how electricity would react during winter or summer weather.

For this project, EA has joined forces with BP to create a simulation that is more in touch with effects of pollution and other energies. According to the company, they provided knowledge to implement different reactions due to “…local pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and the willingness of people to live next to energy-producing facilities…”. It places the ability in the player hands - how environmentally friendly will your city be?

Sim City Societies will be out on November 13th. You may purchase and watch a video demonstration. There are also 3 additional cities (MegaCorp Housing, SkyRise Apartments, and Sleep Tubes Deluxe) given for Windows pre-orders.

by Tal Siach on October 24, 2007 in Software and Add-onsComments (5)

Zamzar LogoHave you ever wanted to convert files without the need of downloading a certain software? How many times have you found yourself searching for freeware that will allow you to open specific files of music, movies or even documents?

It’s seems now there is an easy way. Zamzar is an online software that is dedicated to help you transform your songs, videos, images and documents into different formats. According to the company, their mission is “to provide high quality file conversion for as many file formats as possible”.

The file conversion can be done with 4 easy steps:

  1. Browse the file from you computer or enter the url of the file you would like to convert (there is a 100mb limit in size).
  2. Choose the desired format to convert
  3. Type your email address in order to receive your converted file.
  4. Click on the convert button, and you are ready to go.

Zamzar supports conversion between a wide variety of different file formats including compressed files, and they are constantly adding support for new formats. You can see the different types of extensions Zamzar supports in the Conversion Types page.

We tried using this service to convert a few songs into MP3. Although it took a little time (to upload, convert, receive an email, then download) it was easy to do, and the songs sounded great.

I hope you will find that useful!
